Long loads on Island Class ferries on the Gabriola-Nanaimo Route
Due to issues with the old ramps being used with the new, Island Class ferries, there are times when it is difficult or impossible to load long and/or trailer vehicles on the Gabriola-Nanaimo route. There is currently no ETA for the ramps to be replaced. As such, drivers of vehicles with long or low loads are advised to avoid traveling at particularly low or high tides.
These include RVs with significant overhang or low hitches, receiver-mount bicycle racks, long or low utility trailers or livestock trailers, and large under-mount hitches.
Avoid travel on sailings where the tide* is below 1.5 m (5 ft) or above 3.7 m (12 ft)
Long loads: avoid travel on sailings where the tide* is below 1.5 m (5 ft) or above 3.7 m (12 ft)
Low-bed or low-overhang: avoid travel on sailings if the tide* is below 2.1 m (7 ft) or above 3.4 m (11 ft)
The general commercial vehicle limits are 39500 kg, 18.3 m (50 ft) long and 3 m (10 ft) wide. Drivers of oversize loads should contact Terminal Construction at 250-978-1312.
