Edit: Updated information from BCF indicates that all cancellations are the result of urgent repairs to the tie up dock being undertaken by the Nanaimo Port Authority.

Just received from BC Ferries –

  • Starting tonight and for the next two weeks, the 5:05 pm ferry will be cancelled leaving Descanso Bay.
  • Starting Monday and for the next two weeks, the 7:05 am ferry leaving Descanso Bay will be cancelled.

BC Ferries advises that the reason for these cancellations is that the Nanaimo Port Authority is unable to provide space for the Gwawis to tie up in the evenings for the next two weeks.

The FAC has no further details at this time, and we cannot provide clarity as to why the lack of the usual tie up berth is resulting in these cancellations.

  1. How does this make any sense at all? This is ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. How could any other boat take priorty over the ferry.

  2. This will really affect tradespeople trying to get off Gabe (the 5.05) & commuters in the morning (the 7.05 am). The lack of planning by BC Ferries and their offhandedness towards the community is becoming unconscionable. I know it’s not your fault Heather and you do what you can representing the community on the FAC. And then there’s the planned complete shutdown …

  3. This utterly disgusting how ferries are being cancelled left right and centre! It seems that nobody has the ability to find alternative plans and take the easy way out by cancelling,

  4. Let’s see who or what parks in that spot or what happens on that dock during these two weeks. The alternate use for that spot should be obvious. Either an in person visual or a glance at a marine traffic app should tell us who the port is accommodating. Maybe it’s a big yacht. Maybe it’s some work on the dock itself.

  5. There is still no notice of this on BC Ferry site as of 2:15pm today. There is nothing that says the revised schedule. How could this happen?? It is unbelievable that there is no berth space!!!!

  6. Can they please do a ‘correct’ revised ferry schedule. On the one hand they say in their service notice that the 7:05 and 5:05 from Descanso are cancelled and then have the so called ‘revised’ schedule just below that has both ferries on it. The asterics are only to say the operate from Mon-Fri.

  7. I am really struggling to get casual work because of this ferry cancellation. As of today – November 25th – there seems to be no work on that dock. There are people walking on it every day.
BCFerries needs to understand that working people are being adversely affected by this, and find alternative solutions.
