Yesterday in the BC Legislature, the amendments to the Coastal Ferry Act were approved, signalling changes to the role of the BC Ferry Commissioner as well as an expectation of $15m of efficiency savings within BC Ferries and a $30m target for cost-cutting measures on under-utilised ferry routes over the coming three years to reduce the level of future fare rises.

BCF President, Mike Corrigan warned last month that many late sailings carry few passengers and are constant money losers. He said communities will face hard choices about service levels in the coming months. Transportation Minister, Blair Lekstrom says communities will be consulted before any significant changes in service level take place – but so far we don’t know what changes, if any, are likely to affect Gabriola.
